Plains Bison
Raised as the Prairies Intended
Thundering Ground Bison Ranch promotes a healthy, ecologically diverse land base that supports a herd of plains bison who are allowed to live according to their natural behaviour and instincts. The ranch provides families with healthy, flavourful and quality meat products produced without the use of artificial growth stimulants and unnatural production practices.
All individuals involved in and with the ranch, including family, customers and the public, will be respected and open communication will be encouraged.
Pillars Of Production
A good friend, mentor and fellow bison producer once said “you are in the business of growing grass. Bison are the tool you use to achieve healthy soil and grass.” That stuck with us and ecological sustainability is a core philosophy to our production system. As students of holistic management, the following four philosophies are the cornerstones of our production system.
-
Wildlife habitat – Maintaining an environment for nature to thrive
Healthy grasslands – Promoting healthy rangeland through rotational grazing
Clean water – Limiting livestock access to natural water sources and wetlands
-
Bison bison bison – North American Plains bison
Habitat preservation – Utilizing native grass species in pasture establishment
Natural production practices – Natural instincts and behaviours of the bison guide production practices on the ranch
-
Minimal stress handling – Keeping handling to a minimum and taking the time it takes
Healthy herd – Achieved by quality care and nutrition
Natural production cycle – Bison raised without the use of antibiotics and administered growth stimulants.
-
Bison meat – Produced in a manner to ensure flavour and tenderness
Uncompromised customer satisfaction – Matching ethical and moral principles with food production.
Human experience – From the ranch directly to your family with passion and pride.

What People Are Saying
“I must say I'm so glad you registered for the open farm days in Alberta, as that's how we heard about you and your ranch. I wanted to let you know that we are really quite impressed with the bison. Your butcher was fantastic and I loved that everything was vacuum sealed in small packages for us. We were very happy with how you divided the cuts up for us as well. We have had the opportunity to try a few different cuts and we are thoroughly impressed. Such flavor, richness and so very tender. We really appreciate all the hard work you put into your bison, it really does show in the quality of the meat. Look forward to ordering more next year.”
